Explosion Risk Assessment (ERA)

Explosion Risk Assessment (ERA) is a mandatory document required for any facility where explosive atmospheres may occur at workplaces.

What is ERA?

ERA is a key tool for informed and effective management of explosion risk.

The purpose of ERA is to identify hazards, assess the likelihood of their occurrence and the expected consequences, and define measures intended to minimize those risks. ERA serves as the baseline document for the preparation of another critical document—the Explosion Protection Document (EPD).

ERA and the EPD are the most important documents that Employers must have if explosive atmosphere hazards are present at their facilities. ERA may be prepared as a standalone document or incorporated into the EPD.

Worth knowing

Legal obligation

The Employer’s obligation to prepare an ERA results directly from § 4(4) of the Regulation of the Minister of Economy of 8 July 2010 on minimum occupational health and safety requirements related to the possible occurrence of explosive atmospheres in the workplace (Journal of Laws 2010, No. 138, item 931).

Steps required to prepare an ERA

01

Explosive atmosphere

Assessment of the probability and duration of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere

02

Ignition sources

Assessment of the probability of occurrence and activation of ignition sources, including electrostatic discharges

03

Installations and processes

Assessment of operated installations, applied substances and mixtures, and their mutual interactions

04

Explosion effects

Assessment of the scale of the anticipated effects of an explosion

Assessment of the probability and duration of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere

Assessment of the probability of occurrence and activation of ignition sources, including electrostatic discharges

Assessment of operated installations, applied substances and mixtures, and their mutual interactions

Assessment of the scale of the anticipated effects of an explosion

The ERA must also include workplaces that are or may be connected via openings to other areas where an explosive atmosphere may occur.

Why choose us?

What do you gain by implementing an ERA?

By implementing the measures resulting from the ERA, you create a working environment that enables employees to perform their duties safely, even in the presence of a potential explosive atmosphere.

Assurance of correctness and compliance

Through an audit, you gain assurance that the equipment purchased is properly designed and selected for your technological process—both technically and economically—and is supported by documentation compliant with Polish legal requirements.

Equipment and installation audits

We provide audits of apparatus as well as electrical and non-electrical equipment. These audits include verification of suitability for explosion hazard zones, installation conditions, technical condition, and operating conditions.

Safety and protection of your company

By preparing an ERA, you protect employees’ health and lives, safeguard assets and your company’s reputation, and comply with legal requirements—helping you avoid legal and financial penalties.

When should an ERA be prepared and does it require updating?

Learn more about risk assessment

An Explosion Risk Assessment may be initiated during the technology design or construction phase; however, it must be completed before the Employer makes the workplace available. The ERA forms the basis for preparing the subsequent document required under Polish law.

In accordance with regulatory requirements, the ERA must be updated whenever a significant change occurs that may affect the outcome of the risk assessment.

Whether you need an ERA for an existing installation, are at the design or construction stage, or require an update to an existing document, you can count on us to help. Our expert team has experience across all key industrial sectors, including energy, chemical, food, wood, and paper industries.
