Explosion Protection Document (EPD)

The Explosion Protection Document (EPD) forms the basis for the safe operation of a facility by minimizing the risk of explosion

Worth knowing – EPD

EPD as a legal requirement of 8 July 2010

A facility in which explosive atmospheres may occur is required to have an Explosion Protection Document (EPD).

This is a legal requirement imposed by the Regulation of the Minister of Economy of 8 July 2010 on minimum occupational health and safety requirements related to the possibility of an explosive atmosphere occurring in the workplace (Journal of Laws 2010, No. 138, item 931), which implements into Polish law the provisions of the European ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX user).

In accordance with the requirements of the above-mentioned regulation, the Employer is responsible for the preparation and updating of the Explosion Protection Document (EPD) at the facility.

What is the EPD and what is its purpose?

A document playing a key role in explosion protection in industrial facilities

The Explosion Protection Document (EPD) is the most important document playing a key role in explosion protection in industrial facilities where there is a possibility of the occurrence of explosive atmospheres, i.e. mixtures of air under atmospheric conditions with flammable substances in the form of gases, vapors, mists, or dusts. The primary purpose of the EPD is, above all, to improve safety and protect the health of employees at workplaces where explosive atmospheres may occur.

What should it contain and when should it be prepared?

In accordance with the requirements of the regulation, the EPD should in particular include:

  • description of protective measures to be applied in order to meet the requirements specified in this regulation and to limit the harmful effects of an explosion;
  • a list of explosion hazardous areas together with their classification into zones;
  • a statement by the Employer that:
  • workplaces, equipment, and warning devices are designed, used, and maintained in a manner ensuring safe and proper operation;
  • equipment meets the requirements specified in regulations concerning minimum occupational health and safety requirements for the use of machinery by employees at work;
  • a risk assessment related to the possibility of the occurrence of an explosive atmosphere has been carried out;
  • dates for reviewing the applied protective measures;
  • specification, for all persons performing work for different Employers at the same workplace, of:
  • protective measures,
  • rules for coordinating the application of these measures by the Employer responsible for the workplace;
  • the purpose of coordination and the methods and procedures for its implementation.

The EPD prepared by us meets all of the above requirements.

Depending on the specific case, the EPD may also include other documents required under Polish law, such as:

  • Explosion Hazard Assessment (EHA).
  • Explosion Risk Assessment (ERA).

The EPD must always be prepared before the workplace is made available, based on the risk assessment carried out at the facility.

Why should we prepare the EPD for you?

Hundreds of companies in Poland and across Europe have trusted us—from local enterprises to the largest industrial facilities.

Preparation of the Explosion Protection Document is a complex process requiring specialist knowledge and experience. Most facilities outsource this task to external companies because:

  • regulations are complex and written in legal language,
  • technical requirements are based on numerous, frequently changing standards,
  • knowledge of proven solutions from other plants is required,
  • errors in risk assessment may increase costs and risks to people,
  • in-house preparation carries the risk of a lack of objectivity.

The EPD we prepare is not a “file-and-forget” document.

It is a set of clear rules and guidelines that facilitate a real reduction of explosion risk at the facility. We work with both new and existing installations in which changes affecting safety have occurred.

How long does preparation of the EPD take?

Check how long it takes to prepare the EPD

Preparation of the EPD may take from several weeks to several months, as the implementation time is primarily influenced by the size of the assessed facility and the time required to collect the materials necessary for preparing the EPD.

With many years of experience in preparing EPDs, our experts are able to significantly shorten this time by assisting the user in identifying which information is critical at the initial stage of implementation, which technical documentation must be provided first, and which may be supplemented at a later stage.

Is your facility very large and are you concerned about the cost of preparing or updating the EPD?

We are able to address this by preparing several smaller EPDs for individual areas or departments of the facility.

This allows the preparation costs to be spread over time, as well as faster implementation of the EPD provisions and fulfillment of legal requirements in the areas of the facility that are most critical from an explosion risk perspective. Our many years of experience enable us to identify those areas of the facility that should be addressed first due to their level of explosion hazard.
